At a press conference on October 1, 2009, Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stringer, joined by a coalition of elected officials and advocates, announced the launch of Kill the Drill, a campaign to extend the comment period for the State Generic Environmental Impact Statement and to voice opposition to any hydraulic fracturing in the city’s upstate watershed, which supplies 90 percent of New York City’s drinking water. That day, the Borough President asked for Governor David Paterson to hold a public hearing in NYC, which was later scheduled for November 10th at 6:30pm at Stuyvesant High School, 345 Chambers Street. On October 15, the first Kill the Drill Coalition members meeting was held in a packed room at the Borough President’s Office.
