FRIENDS OF DONNELLAN SQUARE

Finally, after almost three years of advocating for the upgrade of the park median at West 15oth between St Nicholas place and St Nicholas Avenue, former City Councilmember Michels and the New York City of Parks and Recreation answered the call of the CPO. Donnellan Square, once a concrete barren spot, has been transferred into an attractive, welcoming, green space with appropriate benches and lighting.  And, since its upgrade, seniors and families with children have returned to the park media to sit and relax and enjoy the beauty of the surroundings.

A group of community residents have formed Friends of Donnellan Square to ensure that the beauty of the park is maintained and to further restore the park to where it will capture a sense of place and time that’s befitting to its location and history.

Donnellan Square is located in the midst of the Hamilton Heights Sugar Hill Historic District, on what was considered the main thoroughfare to Washington Heights, St. Nicholas Speedway.  It is surrounded by buildings once occupied by such notables as Duke Ellington, Ralph Ellison, Joe Louis and Norman Rockwell.
