The Hamilton Heights Academy opened in fall 2002 with a kindergarten class a plan to develop into a small community school with interested and involved parents, excellent caring teachers, and a diverse community of children, months before Chancellor Klein touted these very virtues as the elements of a successful public school. Housed in a classroom space within PS 280, 155th Street between Amsterdam and St Nicholas Avenues, the Hamilton Heights Academy grew out of the desire of a group of West Harlem parents to create a public school that was intimate and nurturing, academically rigorous, community-based and modeled on some of the most successful alternative public schools in the city. With the support of District 6 Superintendent Dr. Jorge Izquierdo, and working with educators and administrators from the District, the group visited many schools throughout the city and developed a comprehensive plan for the Hamilton Heights Academy, its mission, philosophy, and growth. The academy will grow by one grade each year, with 2 classes per grade, from kindergarten through 8th. The mission of the school is to provide an excellent, developmentally appropriate education for all students-one that supports children as individuals with varied learning styles. The school follows an integrated curriculum that encourages active learning and purposeful investigation. Most importantly, there is an emphasis on parental involvement and a belief that teachers and parents are partners in the learning process. At Hamilton Heights Academy, teachers, staff, parents and children all celebrate diversity by respecting and honoring individuality and work to actively build and foster a sense of community within the classroom and the school.
